Tips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model

Tips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ModelTips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ModelEvery year, 25 lucky ladies land in the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Its one of the most- if not the most- anticipated magazine issues in the world and has launched the careers of dozens of supermodels. So what does it take to become a Sports Illustrated model? Here are a few key things you should know. What Kind of Models Are Sports Illustrated Models? Sports Illustrated models are classified as swimsuit models. And even though the magazine occasionally forgets to include the swimsuit part, bare body parts are always strategically covered. The photos are always classy, and the models are encouraged to be themselves, have fun, and pose naturally. They always look sexy without being overtly sexual. As Swimsuit Editor Diane Smith has said, its all about the perfect combination of beauty, athleticism, and personality. Does Sports Illustrated Hold Casting Calls? Yes, but not in the traditional sense. Every year, Sports Illustrated invites swimsuit hopefuls to Swimsuit HQ for their annual casting call- the key aber sicher here being invite. Aspiring Sports Illustrated hopefuls cant just fill out an online application and hope for the best. Most are invited from major modeling agencies around the world. So if you have your eyes set on the Sports Illustrated prize, your best bet is to work hard at your modeling career and get scouted by a top model agency in a major market like New York, which is where Sports Illustrated is headquartered. Make koranvers your agency is on board with your swimsuit plans and that theyre doing everything possible to promote you and help you achieve your dreams Do I Need to Sign With a Special Swimsuit Modeling Agency? No, you dont. In smaller markets, you might find modeling agencies that specialize in swimsuit models. But the major agencies in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Milan who represent Spor ts Illustrated models dont have swimsuit divisions. Instead, their swimsuit models are represented within the agencys high-fashion, editorial and/or commercial divisions. Do I Need to Be an Experienced Model? No, but it sure helps. Most models work as high-fashion, editorial or fitness models for a while before booking a job with Sports Illustrated. Your best chance of getting noticed by Sports Illustrated is to be signed to a major modeling agency in a big market. Do I Need to Be Athletic? The Swimsuit Edition always features a few pro athletes, but the vast majority of the models arent Olympic stars or famous tennis players. Theyre just beautiful women with very healthy, and sometimes curvy, figures. While its not necessary to be super athletic you must be fit and a bit curvier than the typical super slim, waif-types who normally do runway modeling. Are Plus-size Models Accepted? Yes, however, it is rare. The first plus-size model to officially land a spot in the covet ed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition welches Robyn Lawley in 2015. At 62 and a US size 11, she was also the first plus-size model to grace the cover of Australian Vogue magazine and the first plus-size face of Ralph Lauren. American model Ashley Graham, who is a size 16, also garnered a lot of buzz when she appeared in the magazine in 2015. But, she was a model in a paid advertisement, not featured in the issue itself. However, it just goes to show that Sports Illustrated is becoming more and more open to bodies of all shapes and sizes What if I Dont Make It? First, remember that only 25 models make it into the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition each year, and only a few of those are rookies. Its incredibly competitive, and it takes a very special model to land one of the spots. Luckily, there are plenty of other lucrative opportunities for swimsuit models, such as lingerie modeling, glamor modeling, petite modeling, showroom and fit modeling, and even parts modeling (hands, feet, etc.).

Make Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring Tool

Make Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring ToolMake Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring ToolEmployee referrals were formerly considered a somewhat risky practice - an invitation to nepotism and favoritism. But, in reality, having a strong employee referral program can be a very reliable recruiting tool for businesses. Why? Because most employees would rather walk across a bed of hot coals than recommend a friend or relative who is a bad fit for a role. The evidence suggests, too, that the turnover rate among employees recommended by other staff is typically low.How to create an employee referral program Given the evidence of lower turnover rates among recruits found through employee referrals, and the added benefit of increased staff engagement, its no surprise that more companies today have instituted employee referral programs. Most effective employee referral programs include rewards (e.g., extra vacation days, trips, cash bonuses) for employees who recommend s omeone whom you eventually hire, and who stays with the company for a specific period. Before you launch an employee referral program, make sure you consider the ramifications and establish a systematic process for administering it. Some questions to consider includeWhat incentives are you going to offer for employee referrals, and are you going to vary the incentives based on the importance of the job?How long does a referred employee need to remain with your company before the person who made the referral becomes eligible for the incentive? (The norm at most companies is between three and six months.)What procedure must an employee referral follow? Not finding the right job candidates? We can helpREQUEST TALENTAre you marketing your company as the best place to work?To attract the best and brightest, youll need to convince kompetenzprofil recruits that yours is a great company to work for. Here are some tips to represent your firm as professionally as possibleWhen the time comes to choose the person or people who meet with referred candidates on your companys behalf, forget about seniority and look instead for individuals who have good people skills and consistently generate positive energy.Pay attention to the impression your company website sends and the experience applicants have when they call your company for information or show up for interviews.Make it clear to everyone in your business who may interact with a candidate how important it is to be warm and courteous. At a time when a candidate can spread news of his or her poor experience at your company like wildfire via social media, your reputation can be affected overnight. The last thing you need when youre searching for top talent is a bad reputation.Publicizing your employee referral process After you set up an employee referral program, dont keep it a secret. Publicize it in every way you can - through posters, email, employee newsletters and the company intranet. Keep in mind that your objective is to generate as many quality employee referrals as possible. Remind employees about the program and make sure everyone knows when someone receives a bonus for an employee referral.

Why success is a lousy teacher

Why success is a lousy teacherWhy success is a lousy teacherEarlier this week, I finished the final draft of my forthcoming book. Its a huge milestone, and Ive been delighted with the feedback Ive received from my agent, publisher, and trusted early readers (one said, F*cking incredible Thank you for creating a masterpiece to help the world grow. No matter what the outcome is with this book, it changed the way I choose to approach the world).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAlthough Im happy with the early feedback, Im also taking the time to unterbrechung, reflect, and think through the mistakes I made along the way.Ive learned the hard way that success is the wolf in sheeps clothing. It boosts egos and drives a wedge between appearance and reality. When we succeed, we believe everything went according to plan. When were popping champagne corks to celebrate successes, we avoid a reckoning. When we think were destined for greatness, we departure blaming others if things dont go as planned. Success makes us think we have the Midas touch- that we can walk around turning everything into gold.As Bill Gates says, success is a lousy teacher because it seduces smart people into thinking they cant lose. Whom the Gods wish to destroy, wrote Cyril Connolly, they first call promising. The moment we think weve made it is the moment we stop learning and growing. But its possible for bad decisions to lead to good outcomes. You can win a poorly played poker hand if luck intervenes. A badly shot soccer ball can end up in the goal if it ricochets off another player. A bad trial strategy can produce a win when the facts and the law are on your side. The early readers that enjoyed my book are seeing only the final product. Theyre not seeing the ghastly first drafts, the pages and pages of material I cut out because I welches too embarrassed to even look at them (let alone print them), and the numerous bad decisions I made along the way.Heres one example I had about 12 months to finish the book, and I spent 5 of those months on the first chapter I wrote (leaving only 7 months to finish the remaining 10 chapters). My perfectionism kicked in, sending me down a rabbit hole as I attempted to read everything that was conceivably related to the chapter- including the entireRoutledge Companion to Thought Experiments, a 600-page tome that was largely an excruciating read and ultimately producedzerousable material for the book. This made for a less-than-pleasant 7 months as I scrambled to finish the remaining 10 chapters by my deadline. This was a major time management failure- one that I wont be repeating for my next book.Heres another example of learning from mistakes after a success, from the National Football League (NFL) draft. For my non-American readers, the NFL draft is an annual spectacle where football teams plektrum new players for the upcoming season. E ach team gets to select one player in each of the seven rounds. In the sixth round of the 2000 draft, the New England Patriots picked up a player who would go on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Tom Brady would win five Super Bowls with the Patriots and pick up four Super Bowl MVP awards- the most of any player in NFL history. Brady would be dubbed the biggest steal in the 2000 draft, and the Patriots leadership would be praised for its brilliant strategic maneuvering in scooping up a player of Bradys caliber at the tail end of the draft.Thats one interpretation of the events.Another interpretation is far less forgiving of the Patriots leadership. The Patriots had their eye on Brady for a long time, but they waited until the end of the draft to pick him up (he was the 199th pick of 254 total players- almost as bad as getting picked last in gym class). In an alternate universe, the same process could have generated a very different outcome. Another team could hav e drafted Brady before the Patriots. Brady may not have realized his full potential if injuries hadnt crippled the Patriots starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe, moving Brady into the starting line-up. In this alternate universe- which was inches from the actual one- the Patriots management would have been branded buffoons, not visionaries. The Patriots management had gotten lucky with Brady. Instead of patting themselves on the back about their biggest steal, they treated the Brady incident as a scouting failure and focused on fixing their intelligence mistakes. So the next time youre tempted to start basking in the glory of your success while admiring the scoreboard, stop and pause for a moment. Ask yourself, What wentwrongwith this success? What role did luck, opportunity, and privilege play? What can I learn from it? If we dont ask these questions, well keep upping the ante, but our luck will eventually run its course.Just because youre on a hot streak doesnt mean youll beat the hous e.The story of Tom Brady is based onRyan Holiday, Ego is the Enemy.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da VinciLeonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) is best known as the artist who created the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, but he was also a self-taught engineer. This open-minded, inquisitive, boundless, practical dreamer was driven to learn and had a restless mind. Da Vinci lived in Italy for 67 years during the mid-1400s. In a time far before electricity, when water was used as power, and 100 years before Galileo had worked out measuring time, Da Vinci was an engineer and proficient inventor of both working and theoretical inventions. His artistic talents enabled him to record his mechanical ideas with enough clarity that blueprints for working models could be created, allowing humankind to continue celebrating his achievements in modern days. Da Vinci wanted to create new machines for a new world. He wanted to create better conditions for people as well as animals. He applied his drawing and perspective skills to a career that earned him higher pay than an artist, working as an engineer for many years. There was a need for engineers in Milan in the 1480s to design military fortifications because the region was at war, so Da Vinci wrote a proposal to Duke Sforza which could now safely be deemed the worlds best cover letter, detailing his capabilities and applying for an engineering position. In case of a siege, I know how to dry up the water of the moats and how to construct an infinite number of bridges, covered ways, scaling ladders, and other machines for this type of enterprise, he wrote some 600 years ago. Engineering sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci. He got the job. At age 30, he first explored his engineering talents and went on to work as a military engineer for 17 years in Milan. He studied and designed war instruments such as tanks, catapults, submarines, machine guns, and other weapons. He also focused on mechanics of levers, gears, cranes, hydraulics, ball bearings, bicycles, and flying machines. He displayed civil e ngineering talents as well, with geometry studies and architectural designs of domed churches, fortresses, and canals. Among many other designs, in 1495, he detailed plans for a three-wheeled, wind-up, self-moving auto-mobile that has also been considered the first robot. Da Vinci was the first systems engineer, creating a new attitude about understanding how machines worked. According to curators at the Boston Museum of Science, He reasoned that by understanding how each separate machine part worked, he could modify them and combine them in different ways to improve existing machines or create inventions no one had ever seen before. He wrote the first systematic explanations of how machines work and how the elements of machines can be combined. He wrote daily in his notebooks in Italian, using mercantile script mirror writing, from right to left, not intended for others. He didnt write linearly, in complete thoughts, or with logical progressions, but observationally. His journals c ontain drawings and words that describe concepts, ideas, functions, connections. He wrote thousands of pages comprising 30 scientific journals. The most important is now called the Codex Leicester, his only known continuous and completed writing covering the nature of water, its movement, laws of currents, and how they relate to air, motion, and the stars. The Codex Leicester is also the last publicly owned Da Vinci notebook, currently held by Bill Gates, who purchased it for $30 million. It has been digitized for the world to see, and the actual notebook is exhibited in the Seattle Art Museum with computer programs that display the reverse mirror writing and explain how the text on the pages connect. All other notebooks are owned and on display by libraries or museums throughout the world. The smallest of all the notebooks, with three sheets of notes on geometry, weights, mechanics, and hydraulic machines, is Codex Forester, which dates from 1490-1493 and is now on display in Londo n at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Two books from 1491-1505 contain almost 200 pages about mechanics and a manual for a foundry system for creating an immense horse. fruchtwein of his designs were never published, financed, or built. Some of his futuristic ideas couldnt have been built at the time and took hundreds of years to be re-invented. Even though he did not greatly affect the technology at the time, his theoretical treatments and complete documentation were significant, greatly impacting the future. Da Vinci remains the quintessential example of the utmost in human capability. 4 rituals that will make you mentally strong

4 rituals that will make you mentally strong4 rituals that will make you mentally strongGrit. Resilience. Mental toughness. We hear a lot about them these days. But maybe weshouldnt. Why?Because there have been good solutions tothe underlying problem for about, oh, 2000 years. The ancient Stoic philosophers really knew what they were doing when it came to building mental toughness. In factWhats the fruchtwein effective psychological toolwe have today? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Whats it based on? Stoicism.FromStoicism and the Art of Happiness Ancient Tips For Modern ChallengesStoicism provides a rich armamentarium of strategies and techniques for developing psychological resilience In a sense, ancient Stoicism welches the granddaddy of all self-help and its ideas and techniques have inspired many modern approaches to both personal development and psychological therapy. Its generally accepted that the modern psychotherapy that most resembles ancient Stoic remedies for emotional pr oblems is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and its precursor Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) CBT also happens to have the strongest evidence base, the strongest scientific support, of any modern form of psychological therapy. But a lot of people hear Stoic and think that meansSpock on Star Trek. Wrong. Its bedrngnis going to turn you into a emotionlessrobot. fruchtwein of us get alotof things wrong about Stoicism. The Stoics had some great tools to help fightnegativefeelings. And when youre good at dealing with the negative, you have more time for the positive. And that also helps you stay resilient when it feels like the world is out to get you.So lets learn the basics of what the guys-in-togasreallyhad to say and how it can make you more mentally strong so you can get what you want out of lifeYour stoicismcheatsheetStoicism. The word evensoundsserious. Dont let it scareyou.Zeno, the guy who founded the philosophy, used to teach on what welches basically a porch. The Stoa in Stoicism means porch. So if its less intimidating, think of this ancient wisdom as Porchism because thats basically what it translates as.Now Porchism encompasses a lot of different ideas but for our purposes well focus on two principlesthat are fundamentalFirst People are not disturbed by events, but rather by their judgments about events. Get fired? Sounds bad. End up getting a much better job? So getting fired was good. Pain in your arm? Uh-oh. But were you just in a car accident and the doctor said you might never regain feeling in your limbs? So pain is good. Eventsare neither good nor bad yourinterpretationof them ofthem is good or bad.Sowhen you blame events for your feelings, the toga-guys say youre just plain wrong. The rain didnt make you sad, yourbeliefsabout the rain made you sad.SecondIts critical to know what you can control and what you cant. And for the Stoics, the only thing you everreallyhave control over is your deliberate thoughts. You cant control other peopl e, you cant control nature, and you cant always control your own body. (Try wishing away your migraine and let me know how well that works.)When you get frustrated over something you cannot control (which is most things) youre pretending youre God. You feel you should have power over something you dont and thats why you get angry, frustrated or sad. Yeah, maybe people shouldnt do that, but theyare. Maybe it shouldnt be raining, but itis. You have to accept you do not have control over a lot of stuff- but that doesnt mean you give up. You can influence things and you can try to affect them, but when you delude yourself that you should have 100% control over an outcome, youre almost always going to find yourself emotionally upset if things dont go your way.Now both of these ideas - that youre disturbed by beliefs not events and that the issue of control is at the heart of negative emotions - are central to resilience and mental toughness. Lets learn how to put them to work.(To learn how to never be frustrated again, clickhere.)So a big challenge is on the horizon. Whats the first step to getting mentally stronger?Ask Whats the worst that could happen?Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopherMarcus AureliuswroteBegin each day by telling yourself Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishnessWhy in the world would you want to start the day withthatthought in your head? Because Marcusdidnt want to be surprised. He wanted to be prepared. We allknow people can be difficult. We all know you cant control what they do. If I just said that and nothing else, youd roll your eyes at me and wonder why you decided to read this. And yet when people aredifficult, youoftenrespondlike this was totally unexpected, and then youget angry. Does that make any sense?Reminding yourself of the worst isnt pessimism. Buying life insurance doesnt mean you want to die it means you realistically recognize it can happen and you want to be p repared. So Marcus reminded himself every morning that people were going to be difficult. That way it wouldnt surprise him, and he wouldnt get frustrated and just tell them all to go to hell.He could move right on to negotiating. When were unrealistically optimistic, when our expectations are totally out of whack, we get frustrated and give up. But by thinking about what could go wrong in any situation, youmentally prepare yourselffor it andyou keep on trucking.FromStoicism and the Art of Happiness Ancient Tips For Modern ChallengesSeneca writes that we should contemplate events in advance so that nothing ever takes us by surprise in this way, as What is quite unlooked for is more crushing in its effect, and unexpectedness adds to the weight of a disaster by magnifying the distress experienced (Letters, 91). He goes on to say that we should therefore project our thoughts ahead of us and imagine every conceivable setback so that we may strengthen the mind to cope with them, or as we put it today, to develop psychological resilience in the face of adversity. And if you spend some time thinking about the downside - experiencingthose bad feelings in advance - something else happens. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy calls it decatastrophizing. Thats a fancy word for realizing its not the end of the world.Your first day on the job, something wentwrong and you freaked out. A few weekslater, the saatkorn thing happened and youdidnt even blink. You got used to it.So taking the time to think through the worst that could happen, to feel the negatives before youreallyfeel the negatives, turns down the volume on those emotions when it counts. And that allows you to weather the storm.FromStoicism and the Art of Happiness Ancient Tips For Modern ChallengesAs in Stoicism, a broad range of situations are rehearsed, so that general emotional resilience can be developed, through a process explained by analogy with viral immunization. By exposing yourself to small doses of stress i n a controlled way, sometimes in imagination, you can build up stronger defences and become less vulnerable when confronted with a real-life problem. Psychological resilience tends to generalize, though, so that even situations that are neither anticipated nor directly rehearsed may be experienced as less overwhelming, as long as a wide variety of other adversities have been anticipated and coped with resiliently.(To learn the morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, clickhere.)So youve thought about the worst and youre prepared. Great. But now that big challenge is looming. Should you optimistically say, Im gonna win? Absolutely notUse a reserve clauseThe Stoic philosopher Epictetus called ithupexhairesis. Annnnnnd, lets just stick with calling it a reserve clause, shall we?When someone says, God willing or, Fate permitting, thats a reserve clause. Theyre acknowledging that at least part of the outcome is not undertheir control - and you know how the Stoics felt about cont rol. When you use a reserve clause,if things dont work out, you dont crater your self-esteem and give up on your goals. You know its not 100% in your control and therefore it cant be 100% your fault. This isntan excuse to be lazy. Its recognizing thatyou have control over process, not outcome. Saying, I am definitely going to get an A+ on that exam is a lie. Its outside your control. But saying, I am going to study my ass off is within your control. And by focusing on what you can control, you also give yourself a plan of action. If yourejust pollyanna optimistic about getting that A+, you can be lazy. By recognizing all you have power over is studying, then boom you know what you need to do next.If you think you can control outcomes, reality is eventually going to punch you in the face and let you know whos boss. And that will make you angry with yourself or angry with the world. And youll want to give up.Instead, focus on what you can control process. Plain and simple, do all that yo u can. Fate permitting, youll do well. And if you dont, then that wasnt under your control. So dont sweat it. In the words of the great Stoic,SenecaIn short, the wise man looks to the purpose of all actions, not their consequences beginnings are in our power but Fortune judges the outcome, and I do not grant her a verdict upon me.(To learn how 5 post-it notes can make you happy, confident and successful, clickhere.)Okay, so you thought about the worst and you were emotionally prepared. You used a reserve clause and did your best. But you still failed. Time to quit and be sad? No. Youre mentally tougher than thatTake the view from aboveWhen things get you down and you want to give up, the Stoics knew that what you needed was perspective. The world is a big place. Your life is long. But when youfeel like youscrewed up, youforget this and your minor setback is all you can think about. So take a step back. Look at the big picture. HeresMarcus AureliusMany of the anxieties that harass you are superfluous being but creatures of your own fancy, you can rid yourself of them and expand into an ampler region, letting your thought sweep over the entire universe, contemplating the illimitable tracts of eternity.Stoics like to take the view from above. Imagine viewing yourself from the sky. Now see how small you are compared to the city youre in. And how small that city is compared to the country. How tiny the country is compared to the world. And the world is just a blue dot in the galaxy. This doesnt mean youre insignificant. Youre getting caught in your interpretations of the events, and youre probably mistaken about what was under your control. Your problems are small. And much like you are tiny compared to the galaxy, your current problem is likely minuscule in the grand scheme of your life.Yes, you screwed up. But youve screwed up before - many times - and it felt like the end of the world then, too. It wasnt.Nobel prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman called th is commonerror afocusing illusionNothing in life is as important as you think it is while you are thinking about it.When you put problems into a bigger perspective like the view from above, you can resist the focusing illusion, and you can stay mentally strong under the most intense pressure. My friendJoe, an Army Ranger and Iraq war veteran, once took a job in a Hollywood agency mailroom. Those jobs are near-impossibleto get because itspretty much the only path to becoming a big shot agent in Tinseltown. But its also known for being one of the toughest jobs in a very tough industry. You work absurdly long hours for terrible pay and the level of abuse you deal with is the stuff of legend. I asked Joe how the heck he managed to put up with all the grief. He looked at me like I was crazy and saidEric,in my prior job peopleshot at me.Thats perspective. But ho w do you stay inspired to keep after your goals once youve been knocked down?Ask What would Batman do?Fine, fine, the Stoics never talkedabout Batman. But they might as well have. They did think a very important ritual was Contemplation of the Sage. The Sage is to Stoicism what becoming a Buddha is to Buddhism. Youve mastered the art.Youve beatenthe final level of the video game.Plain and simple, when you find yourself lackingstrength, the Stoics felt you needed a role model. Someone to look up to, and someone to be inspired by. Thinking about that person(even if they happen to be a fictional character who defends Gotham City) can give you guidance and fortitude. In the words ofSenecaChoose someone whose way of life as well as words, and whose very face as mirroring the character that lies behind it, have won your approval. Be always pointing him out to yourself either as your guardian or as your model. There is a need, in my view, for someone as a standard against which our characte rs can measure themselves. Without a ruler to do it against you wont make the crooked straight. How do you choose your role model? Ask yourself who you admire. Who you want to be.FromBuild Your Resilience Teach Yourself How to Survive and Thrive in Any SituationWhich qualities do you most admire in others? What sort of person, ultimately, do you want to be in life? If this is our standard then, in a sense, the concept of resilience must be subordinate to it. Resilience refers to your ability to remain committed to valued living, a life emulating your ideal, even in the face of adversity, and to re-commit to your values, getting back on course after a setback has led you temporarily astray. And, for the record, this isnt just a bunch of inspirational hooey from 2000 years ago. 3 ways the gender pay gap still hurts women

3 ways the gender pay gap still hurts women 3 ways the gender pay gap still hurts women The year is 2018, and men and women are still not getting paid equally for the same work responsibilities. Women face financial penalties at work and at home that follow them throughout their career, creating cycles of being underpaid. With knowledge comes power. Here are the numbers on ways women continue to get underpaid so that we can help end these cycles of inequity sooner rather than later:It gets worse as women ageAcross every industry and role, the average woman in 2018 only earns 77.9 cents for every manĆ¢€™s dollar, according to a new PayScale report that surveyed 46,000 respondents evaluating job offers. By the time women are over 45, that gap widens to 69.1 cents for a manĆ¢€™s dollar.Opportunity gaps led to wider pay gaps. There are not enough women in the corner office commanding higher pay.By the middle of their career, 60% of women are still in individual contributor roles, while only 52% of men are in these roles. Men were more likely to jump into higher-level manageria l roles by the middle of their career, which led to more pay.Ć¢€œWorkers in higher-level roles almost always earn a higher salary, so the lack of women in these roles means the average woman is almost certainly destined to make less than the average man,Ć¢€ the report concluded.Taking time off hurts womenThe PayScale report  found that women are more likely than men to take time off work to care for a family member or a child.Extended breaks of more than a year are not looked upon favorably by employers. When they return to the workforce, women are going to make 7.3 percent less on average.Women in finance face the biggest gapThe pay gap, unfortunately, exists in all industries, but some women in industries face harder battles to be paid equally than others. When not controlling for various factors like seniority, women in finance face the biggest gap, making 73 cents on the dollar. Female consultants also fared worse than men, making 79 cents on the dollar, while women in healthcare made 81 cents on the dollar.

How to Make Friends At Work - The Muse

How to Make Friends At Work - The Muse How to Make Friends At Work A sense of community and belonging. It's something that we all crave- hey, it's even a level in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. But, while this concept applies everywhere, it really holds water in the workplace. After all, you spend a major chunk of your time in the office, and it's helpful to know that you have people you can lean on and socialize with. Even further, when your professional life makes you feel vulnerable or anxious, having that tight-knit circle of colleagues can be a huge asset and confidence boost. But, here's the thing: Finding your tribe at work isn't always easy, particularly when you're one of many employees in a huge company. So, how can you identify and build a support system, even when you feel like you're just a number among hundreds- or even thousands- of co-workers? Here's how to put yourself out there and find your people. 1. Think Outside the Box Within your company, there are undoubtedly people that you work with far more than others. You'll collaborate more frequently with the people in your immediate department than anybody else, for example. But that doesn't mean that all of your close work friends need to come from that same group. There's no rule stating that your tribe needs to be built with people who do the exact same things as you. You shouldn't hesitate to expand your horizons and think outside the box when seeking people to forge a bond with. Perhaps you and that person in the accounting department don't ever have overlapping projects- but, you don't need to have similar work in order to have similar values. 2. Join (or Start!) an Employee Resource Group Employee Resource Groups are a great way to reach out beyond your group of immediate colleagues and find others who share your interests and passions. If you're unfamiliar with what these are, Employee Resource Groups are employee-led and voluntary groups that aim to foster a more inclusive and collaborative company culture. USA Today Network, for example, has these groups geared toward women, young professionals, and veterans. When you find a group that seems like a fit for you, go ahead and attend some of the meetings, discussions, and get-togethers. Not only will you be able to meet people you align with outside of your department, but you'll also contribute to bettering your workplace. If your company doesn't currently have any groups for you to join? Well, come up with one you think would be helpful, then run that idea up the flagpole to see if you can get it started. 3. Work on Cross-Departmental Projects Another great way to reach out and meet new co-workers is to volunteer to work on cross-departmental initiatives. Whether it's a large project that requires the expertise of numerous departments, or it's something more casual- like helping to plan your company's anniversary party, for example- engaging in these sorts of opportunities offers numerous benefits. By stepping up to the plate, you'll be able to expand your web of connections in the office, while also challenging yourself to learn more about how other teams work. 4. Sit With Someone New You sit at the same table with the very same people for lunch every day (or, you just chow down on that sandwich alone at your desk!). When you head out for a company happy hour, you head straight to the corner where your cube-mates are hanging out. Sure, that's easy and comforting. But, if your goal is to find new friends and build your tribe, socializing with the same people day in and day out is opposite of what you should be doing. Instead, ask someone new (perhaps somebody you met in an Employee Resource Group or while working on that cross-departmental project!) to grab lunch with you. Or, when you arrive at that office happy hour, introduce yourself to somebody you don't already know. It seems like a relatively small change. But, forcing yourself out of your comfort zone can make a huge impact on how connected you feel in the office. 5. Share About Your Personal Life Years ago, it was common advice that you shouldn't share too much about your personal life at the office. But, times have changed. While you still shouldn't share the gory details of all of your problems, there is a lot to be said for opening up about your passions and hobbies outside of work. Doing so will help you find people that share those same interests- giving you something else to connect on, aside from the fact that you earn your paycheck from the same place. So, don't think that age-old advice means that you need to keep every single conversation work-related. Sharing more about your whole, authentic self can be a great way to connect on a deeper level with people in the office. When you implement these tips and find your tribe at work? Don't fall into the trap of thinking that this equates to being an exclusive clique. Invite other people in, and soon you'll have a large group of close colleagues, which will help you to feel that much more connected in the office. After all, when it comes to friends at work, this old sentiment holds true: The more, the merrier!

Work Book Club Success Stories

Work Book Club Success Stories Work Book Club Success Stories Are you interested in how to put a book club together at work? Workplace book clubs have long been recommended as an effective, efficient form of on-the-job employee development. A book club provides benefits for the employee- and for the employer. Employees learn new concepts and ways of doing things that they can apply in the workplace.A workbook club builds camaraderie and teamwork among the employees who attend. It is a team building activity. It provides an opportunity for employees to step up and practice leadership roles such as leading a group discussion. When employees learn the same concepts, by reading the same book, they share a language and ideas that make  the application of the ideas easier and more seamless in the workplace. You can help your organization become an organization that continuously learns and develops. In an earlier article, I recommended an overall approach to implementing work book clubs. In this article, a couple of employers have shared their book club success with my readers. Sara Janes, Marketing Manager for Pinnacle Financial Partners and Scott Kriscovich, President of TrueBridge Resources  (now North Highland Workplace Consulting), a national professional staffing firm, shared their experiences with book clubs in their workplaces. Interview With Sara Janes of Pinnacle Financial Partners Susan Heathfield: What was the impetus for the book club in your organization and how did you approach it? Sara Janes: When Pinnacle was founded in 2000, learning was one of our core values. We wanted to make sure associates were encouraged to keep reading and honing their skills. The firm had about 40 associates in the beginning, so everyone would meet at President and CEO Terry TurnerĆ¢€™s house to discuss the book he chose and strengthen their relationships over dinner. Terry is a voracious reader, so he would read several in search of the book that best applied to Pinnacle. Book clubs take place two to three times a year and are voluntary, but most associates choose to participate. Heathfield: What was successful and not successful about your book club? Janes: The concept has been so popular that some associates have formed their own book clubs within their workgroups. As Pinnacle grew, it became more difficult to get everyone into one room to discuss the book. We had to adjust and form multiple sessions. Everyone still reads the same book, but now they can sign into our online learning system, choose the date and location that works for them and request the book. Now that we have 750 associates, there are too many sessions for Terry to lead personally, so he hosts a discussion for 20 or so leaders who then go on to lead the rest of the book club meetings. Heathfield: What has been the impact of Pinnacle sponsoring book clubs in the workplace? Janes: Book clubs help associates see the big picture and apply what they have read about to their work. WeĆ¢€™re a financial services firm, but we have learned a lot of lessons from StarbucksĆ¢€™ and Ritz-CarltonĆ¢€™s experiences. After the book clubs are over, associates will refer to stories from the books in meetings and talk about whether we can approach challenges in the same way. The book clubs are also a way for associates to have fun- they get to know people in other areas of the firm and deepen existing relationships. We have found that by participating in book clubs, associates are more motivated and committed. Heathfield: What books would you recommend that made a difference for your company? Janes: Some books weĆ¢€™ve read in the book club and that I would recommend include: Onward: How Starbucks Fought for its Life without Losing its Soul,Good to Great, andThe New Gold Standard about Ritz-CarltonĆ¢€™s customer service. The latest book we read, Linchpin: Are you Indispensable? by Seth Godin helped energize associates in all areas of our firm. It makes the case that anyone, regardless of their title or place in the company, can make a significant contribution. Interview with Scott Kriscovich, President of TrueBridge Resources Susan Heathfield: What was the impetus for the book club in your organization and how did you approach it? Scott Kriscovich: We decided to create a book club at TrueBridge Resources based on several factors: We started it from the beginning when we were a very small company because I was looking for ways to build a company culture and cohesion among our team at the offset. WeĆ¢€™ve read several books where IĆ¢€™ve tried to incorporate those thoughts and ideas into our thinking as a company and how we run the business; it allows us to have a common language and common context. For example, when I talk about Ć¢€œhedgehogsĆ¢€ or Ć¢€œflywheelsĆ¢€ from Jim CollinsĆ¢€™ Good to Great, then everyone knows what I am referring to without my having to explain it. Susan Heathfield: How is your book club set up? Can you share details with my readers? Scott Kriscovich: Employees are provided with a copy of the book. They are expected to read the book and be prepared to discuss the book at the quarterly Book Review meeting. During the quarterly discussion, we will review aspects of the book that may help us to function better as a team. It could include setting action items and determining necessary follow-up activities. Employees are divided into randomly selected groups of no more than 15 employees each for the book discussion. The discussion will be lead by a volunteer employee facilitator who will guide the discussion, asking probing questions as needed. The facilitator will assign one member of the group to serve as the note taker for the meeting. Since each discussion group includes a variety of internal employees from different geographic locations, the discussion will be held via a conference call. Every employee is expected to serve as a facilitator at one point in their careers with TrueBridge Resources. Heathfield: What was successful and not successful about your book club? Kriscovich: Our successes include: We all say that we want to read more, so putting a lightweight structure around it encourages and gives us a platform to do that.It allowed us to connect and build a relationship with Joe Callaway, one of the authors whose books weĆ¢€™ve read. He ended up interviewing us for one of his upcoming pieces. We just read The Southwest Airlines Way as we were launching and introducing our one TrueBridge Resources Way into our company culture. We were able to parallel what we read in the book to our own circumstances especially because both are considered commoditized industries. It allowed us to help define our unique differentiators internally and for our stakeholders. Our challenge was: It is difficult to hold a book club discussion with 12-14 active participants over the phone (our book club is held across all nine of our offices). We decided to max the group at 15 and then with at least four new people; we add a new facilitated group. Facilitators meet before each monthly book club call to come up with common discussion points and direction, then meet afterward to compile the primary takeaways to share with our entire team. Heathfield: What has been the impact of Pinnacle sponsoring book clubs in the workplace? Kriscovich: We encourage people to volunteer to lead book club discussions, and we have seen people from different teams and different functions hold that role. Different geographically, in responsibility, at level; everyone is part of TrueBridge Resources, and it gives us a common ground. The other impact IĆ¢€™ve seen is that our staff is proud of the fact that we have a book club and make reference to it and what theyĆ¢€™ve learned in business meetings and internally. Not everyone reads every book; it is a voluntary program because the minute you tell them they have to do it, the book club evolves into something else. Heathfield: What books would you recommend that made a difference for your company? Kriscovich: Because we have a system in place where we choose the books democratically, we have found that each book we have read has facilitated exciting discussion and affected our organization positively in some way. HereĆ¢€™s our booklist for this year: Crucial Conversations or Difficult ConversationsDelivering Happiness: The Path to Profit, Passion, and Purpose or The Zappos ExperienceGetting Past No or Getting To YesHigh Five or Raving Fans Book clubs at work are an inexpensive way for employees to develop their skills both personally and professionally. Book clubs help you build your culture and develop your employees. They contribute to employee satisfaction, employee motivation, and retention. Why not try one?

Articles That Are Music To Creative Ears

Articles That Are Music To Creative Ears Articles That Are Music To Creative Ears Taking a leaf out of the popular and funny porn for women and porn for new moms books (dont worry, none of them are x-rated), the following articles tell creative people exactly what they want to hear, need to hear, and never hear enough. From the basics of writing a creative brief that art directors and copywriters can actually use, to talking about morale and creating solid ads, these articles are like catnip to them. Mediocrity and Vanilla are Enemies of Advertising Vanilla is a flavor everyone, or 99% of ice cream eaters, like. Its rarely loved or talked about with passion, but its a safe bet. If youre serving ice cream, go with vanilla over something like Rocky Road or Cherry Garcia. But how many people will taste vanilla ice cream and blog about it? Or rant about it to their friends? Or insist that they get the recipe for it?  Vanilla is mediocre, as flavors go. It is safe. Really safe. And safe advertising suffers the same flaws. If you play it safe, youre playing to lose.   The Power of Failure and the Success It Can Bring FAIL and HARDER.  Two words that, when placed together, create an idea much bigger than themselves. These two words are emblazoned on a wall at Wieden Kennedys main office - an image made entirely of thumbtacks; over 100,000 of them to be more accurate. Of course, it would have been easier to create those words with the thumbtacks, and leave the space around them blank.  Thats not the WK way. Instead, the negative space is filled with the thumbtacks, leaving the words FAIL HARDER, in a beautifully scripted font, to shine through. It took 351 hours to complete. In essence, they chose the hard way to get the message across. This is in the DNA of one of the most successful, and most creative, advertising agencies in the world. And it underlines one of the most important lessons in advertisingĆ¢€¦   One Quick Easy Way To Do Better Work There is no shortcut to talent and creativity. While you can always get better, and learn more, you need to have the raw ability to become a success in advertising. However, there are tried and trusted methods you can use to do better work. Some of these that many creatives rely are listed in this article. Read more.   Great Advertising Needs Great Clients The advertising industry has produced some truly remarkable campaigns over the years. From the epic 1984 Superbowl spot for Apple (agency: TBWAChiatDay) to the ridiculously good Subservient Chicken for Burger King (agency: Crispin, Porter Bogusky), and hundreds in between, great ads produce a reaction from the consumer that drives the brand forward and makes a huge impact. Some say that these ideas are few and far between, and that advertising is 90% mediocrity and 10% brilliance. But those of us in the industry, on the creative side at least, know that brilliant ideas are born every day. Sadly, having a great idea is really only half of the battle. Getting the client to buy it, thats a different story.   Giving Credit Where Its Due In most careers, advertising included, people like to receive credit for the hard work that they do. However, unlike acting performances, top doctors or genius accountants, its often difficult to nail down the source of the inspiration in an advertising agency.   Why Creatives Should Always Present Their Own Work In advertising, marketing and design agencies, different roles exist to facilitate the production of good, creative work. There are people trained in account management, others who are trained in production, and theres a whole department filled with creative minds. These are the copywriters, art directors and designers who produce the creative work that makes the agency what it is. However, all too often, these creative are not there to present their own work. This happens for several reasons, outlined below. It is strange to think anyone could stand there and say keep the creator of this work out of the meeting room, we dont need to know his or her rationale but it happens. Find out why.

Wearables Help Stroke Victims

Wearables Help Stroke Victims Wearables Help Stroke Victims Imagine the feeling of not being able to do all the routine, effortless movements youve always performed. The motion of brushing your teeth. Putting one foot in front of the other to walk your dog. Even raising a spoon of cereal to your lips to start your day. This unfortunately can sometimes be the fate of a stroke victim. And rehabilitation can equal huge frustration, at a time when the patient is already frustrated. A team at New York University has the goal of making this uphill climb a little easier for stroke victims through a new, low-cost, wearable sensor system. Strokes are a very common problem in the United States, he says. There has been a high concentration of research on stroke patients, says Ashwin Raj Kumar, who has a masters degree in mechanical engineering from New York University and is presently pursuing his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering there. And people dont realize there is a large number of young stroke patients here also, people who want to get back to their life, too. According to the American Stroke Associations website, each year approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke. For rehabilitation, they go to clinics but few products supplement the rehab well in a home-based setting, Raj Kumar says. Sensors in the jacket measure arm placement. Image: NYU Their system involves wearable devices, which include a glove and a jacket to have microcontrollers measure the movements of a user and feed it to a smartphone, giving the data to patient and doctor alike. This can lead to more interaction between them, with the doctor able to be that much more involved in helping the patient in between in-person visits, he says. One of the areas the glove looks at is the wrist orientation and the jacket focuses of arm orientation. Sensors show the user how theyre doing when it comes to tasks such as lifting or gripping. The user performs the action and sees the effect. This gives them a feeling of control in their improvement, says Raj Kumar. They arent just doing exercises but getting true feedback to encourage and feel part of a team [achieving] a goal. It can also be used in a virtual reality game, allowing a user to see what they should be doing and adding a little fun to tasks that can otherwise seem like pure drudgery. They see their performance when doing the exercises in parts of the body not affected by the stroke which can possibly help serve as a teaching tool for the areas needing rehabilitation, he says. The plan is to take the device and make many prototypes and work with stroke centers to understand how effective the rehabilitation is and well incorporate that feedback, he says. There are challenges with this work. Even when designing the glove, you need to think about how it will be effective. A stroke patient can have a closed fist, for example. Youre trying to create a device that will give them comfort when theyre already feeling less than comfortable. As much as anything, they want to give them hope. Strokes can happen at any time and often take someone out of a normal life without any warning, says Raj Kumar. Think about being jolted like that. We want to get them back to what they knew beforehand if its possible. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Strokes can happen at any time and often take someone out of a normal life without any warning. Think about being jolted like that.Ashwin Raj Kumar, New York University
