7 Things Productive People Do to Get mora Done Without Feeling Busier Have you ever found yurself wishing there were mora hours in the week?As a researcher of the way people use time, Laura Vanderkam hears this sentiment often. Its a sentiment that led her a journalist, author of several books on productivity and time management, and mother of four to investigate how people with successful careers and meaningful personal lives use their weeks alloted 168 hours.The result of that investigation? Vanderkams most recent book, We all have stories we tell ourselves about time, and many of those are negative stories Im always behind, I never see my family, I never have enough time, Vanderkam told Romy Newman, president and co-founder of Fairygodboss, in a recent webinar. When people feel starved for time, they tend to be more reactive and do whatever is screaming loudest in front of them... instead of surveying what tasks are in front of them and choosing more wisely and effectively.To he lp us gain a more accurate understanding of what time we have at our disposal, as well as how to most effectively leverage that time, Vanderkam studied the lives of high-performing women who make at least six figures a year and have children under the age of 18. Under her direction, participants tracked their time for a week, and some surprising patterns emerged. Notable among these was that the way we perceive time and our own busyness impacts our sense of well being, regardless of how busy we actually are.The goal, Vanderkam said, should be to experience time as a rich tapestry, versus a profilloser reifen lineouleum floor youre just sliding along. With the goal of helping more people fit into the former category, Vanderkam shared with Newman and the webinar audience seven imperatives from Off the Clock we can all use to feel less busy and get more done.1. Tend your garden.How much time do you really have in a week? Before any progress can be made toward increasing productivity while slowing down the hamster wheel, its crucial to get a factual understanding of where your time goes by keeping a detailed log. As Vanderkam learned in her study of high-performing women, for many of us, our perspective of time doesnt match up with our realities.People were claiming to work over 70 hours per work week and were actually off by about 25 hours, Vanderkam explained. A 55-hour work week is still very long but knowing that it is 55, lets then figure out, what we are doing with those 55 hours? We need to try to view our lives holistically before we come to very harsh decisions about time.2. Make life memorable.When we say where did the time go, what were actually saying is we dont remember where the time went, Vanderkam said. We didnt do anything memorable with that time.Squeezing memorable moments into an already jam-packed scheduled may seem daunting. But the spillover effects of those moments, she insisted, will make the rest of your schedule feel more manageable, and also part of a richer picture.We have to figure out how to put those memorable things into our lives, and to do it regularly, she said. A lot of leisure time we have is spent in non-memorable ways. Youre not going to remember scrolling through Twitter for an hour or most of what you watch on television. And if you cant remember it, its as though that time never existed.3. Stop filling time.When we feel overwhelmingly busy, we lose the ability to intuitively prioritize. Thus, we wind up cramming our to-do lists with items that have very little impact.Many of the things we fill time with are there just because theyre there, she said. We put them there because someone asked us to, and we thought to ourselves, Are we free?Thats one question to ask when making decisions around our use of time but its not a question that helps you understand value or impact. Vanderkam instead advised listeners to be judicious about what you can take on, as well as the worth of what youre agreeing to take on.4. Linger.Feeling present makes for a richer experience of time, and of life. Whether its carving out time for a quiet cup of coffee in the morning before the days chaos takes hold or leaving the office to fit in a midday walk, Vanderkam recommends stretching the experience of good moments as often as possible.5. Invest in your happiness.Move time from the counting minutes category into the tolerable or even great category, she said. Expectations are infinite and time is finite. If you do something that actually rejuvenates yourself, youll be better prepared to tackle the other stuff later.When we feel busy, it can be difficult to prioritize ourselves but, as Vanderkam put it, your inbox will still be there.Time will expand if we take in what we choose to do with it, she said. If your friends are going to dinner on a Tuesday night and you think it will be fun, challenge yourself to say yes to that.For Vanderkams part, she uses a three-category system to plan her time out in week-long chunks.I make myself a three-category priority list career, self, and relationships. What are the top things I want to do in each category next week? she said. Its very hard to make a three-category list and then leave one of the categories blank.6. Let it go.Often, Vanderkam says, people are guilty of anguishing over things that arent worth anguishing about. Letting go of the tasks and perceived problems that we allow to needlessly take up mental space will create more room for what matters. And for tasks that arent necessarily time sensitive, she says she uses one trick in particular to keep her to-do list from becoming unnecessarily bogged down.I ask myself, Would I do this thing tomorrow? she said. Its very hard to picture three to four weeks in the future, so sometimes we wind up saying yes to something thats not the best use of our time.7. Remember that people are a good use of time.Tellingly, in Off the Clock, Vanderkam found that people who felt the least starved for time devoted a higher proportion of their leisure time to interacting with family and friends. Meanwhile, people who felt starved for time spent a larger amount of time watching TV and on social media.Being online is leisure time, but it doesnt necessarily feel good, she said, referencing an internet poll included in her research. Fifty percent of people in the poll couldnt remember the last time they had me time. But scrolling around online taking polls is me time it doesnt feel like a day at the spa, so people tend not to count it, but its me time.People are statistically likelier, however, to perceive offline time as nourishing and well spent particularly if it involves bonding with loved ones.Your phone is a great way to logistically carve out time to make space for real relationships, she said. If youre texting to make plans with a friend, then thats great. But if all youre doing is texting, that isnt deepening your experience of time.--

It boosts egos and drives a wedge between appearance and reality. When we succeed, we believe everything went according to plan. When were popping champagne corks to celebrate successes, we avoid a reckoning. When we think were destined for greatness, we departure blaming others if things dont go as planned. Success makes us think we have the Midas touch- that we can walk around turning everything into gold.As Bill Gates says, success is a lousy teacher because it seduces smart people into thinking they cant lose. Whom the Gods wish to destroy, wrote Cyril Connolly, they first call promising. The moment we think weve made it is the moment we stop learning and growing.But its possible for bad decisions to lead to good outcomes. You can win a poorly played poker hand if luck intervenes. A badly shot soccer ball can end up in the goal if it ricochets off another player. A bad trial strategy can produce a win when the facts and the law are on your side.The early readers that enjoyed my book are seeing only the final product. Theyre not seeing the ghastly first drafts, the pages and pages of material I cut out because I welches too embarrassed to even look at them (let alone print them), and the numerous bad decisions I made along the way.Heres one example I had about 12 months to finish the book, and I spent 5 of those months on the first chapter I wrote (leaving only 7 months to finish the remaining 10 chapters). My perfectionism kicked in, sending me down a rabbit hole as I attempted to read everything that was conceivably related to the chapter- including the entireRoutledge Companion to Thought Experiments, a 600-page tome that was largely an excruciating read and ultimately producedzerousable material for the book. This made for a less-than-pleasant 7 months as I scrambled to finish the remaining 10 chapters by my deadline. This was a major time management failure- one that I wont be repeating for my next book.Heres another example of learning from mistakes after a success, from the National Football League (NFL) draft. For my non-American readers, the NFL draft is an annual spectacle where football teams plektrum new players for the upcoming season. E ach team gets to select one player in each of the seven rounds.In the sixth round of the 2000 draft, the New England Patriots picked up a player who would go on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Tom Brady would win five Super Bowls with the Patriots and pick up four Super Bowl MVP awards- the most of any player in NFL history. Brady would be dubbed the biggest steal in the 2000 draft, and the Patriots leadership would be praised for its brilliant strategic maneuvering in scooping up a player of Bradys caliber at the tail end of the draft.Thats one interpretation of the events.Another interpretation is far less forgiving of the Patriots leadership. The Patriots had their eye on Brady for a long time, but they waited until the end of the draft to pick him up (he was the 199th pick of 254 total players- almost as bad as getting picked last in gym class).In an alternate universe, the same process could have generated a very different outcome. Another team could hav e drafted Brady before the Patriots. Brady may not have realized his full potential if injuries hadnt crippled the Patriots starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe, moving Brady into the starting line-up. In this alternate universe- which was inches from the actual one- the Patriots management would have been branded buffoons, not visionaries.The Patriots management had gotten lucky with Brady. Instead of patting themselves on the back about their biggest steal, they treated the Brady incident as a scouting failure and focused on fixing their intelligence mistakes.So the next time youre tempted to start basking in the glory of your success while admiring the scoreboard, stop and pause for a moment. Ask yourself, What wentwrongwith this success? What role did luck, opportunity, and privilege play? What can I learn from it? Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da VinciLeonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) is best known as the artist who created the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, but he was also a self-taught engineer. This open-minded, inquisitive, boundless, practical dreamer was driven to learn and had a restless mind. Da Vinci lived in Italy for 67 years during the mid-1400s. In a time far before electricity, when water was used as power, and 100 years before Galileo had worked out measuring time, Da Vinci was an engineer and proficient inventor of both working and theoretical inventions. His artistic talents enabled him to record his mechanical ideas with enough clarity that blueprints for working models could be created, allowing humankind to continue celebrating his achievements in modern days. Da Vinci wanted to create new machines for a new world. He wanted to create better conditions for people as well as animals. He applied his drawing and perspective skills to a career that earned him higher pay than an artist, working as an engineer for many years. There was a need for engineers in Milan in the 1480s to design military fortifications because the region was at war, so Da Vinci wrote a proposal to Duke Sforza which could now safely be deemed the worlds best cover letter, detailing his capabilities and applying for an engineering position. In case of a siege, I know how to dry up the water of the moats and how to construct an infinite number of bridges, covered ways, scaling ladders, and other machines for this type of enterprise, he wrote some 600 years ago. Engineering sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci. He got the job. At age 30, he first explored his engineering talents and went on to work as a military engineer for 17 years in Milan. He studied and designed war instruments such as tanks, catapults, submarines, machine guns, and other weapons. He also focused on mechanics of levers, gears, cranes, hydraulics, ball bearings, bicycles, and flying machines. He displayed civil e ngineering talents as well, with geometry studies and architectural designs of domed churches, fortresses, and canals. Among many other designs, in 1495, he detailed plans for a three-wheeled, wind-up, self-moving auto-mobile that has also been considered the first robot. Da Vinci was the first systems engineer, creating a new attitude about understanding how machines worked. According to curators at the Boston Museum of Science, He reasoned that by understanding how each separate machine part worked, he could modify them and combine them in different ways to improve existing machines or create inventions no one had ever seen before. He wrote the first systematic explanations of how machines work and how the elements of machines can be combined. He wrote daily in his notebooks in Italian, using mercantile script mirror writing, from right to left, not intended for others. He didnt write linearly, in complete thoughts, or with logical progressions, but observationally. His journals c ontain drawings and words that describe concepts, ideas, functions, connections. He wrote thousands of pages comprising 30 scientific journals. The most important is now called the Codex Leicester, his only known continuous and completed writing covering the nature of water, its movement, laws of currents, and how they relate to air, motion, and the stars. The Codex Leicester is also the last publicly owned Da Vinci notebook, currently held by Bill Gates, who purchased it for $30 million. It has been digitized for the world to see, and the actual notebook is exhibited in the Seattle Art Museum with computer programs that display the reverse mirror writing and explain how the text on the pages connect. All other notebooks are owned and on display by libraries or museums throughout the world. The smallest of all the notebooks, with three sheets of notes on geometry, weights, mechanics, and hydraulic machines, is Codex Forester, which dates from 1490-1493 and is now on display in Londo n at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Two books from 1491-1505 contain almost 200 pages about mechanics and a manual for a foundry system for creating an immense horse. fruchtwein of his designs were never published, financed, or built. Some of his futuristic ideas couldnt have been built at the time and took hundreds of years to be re-invented. Even though he did not greatly affect the technology at the time, his theoretical treatments and complete documentation were significant, greatly impacting the future.
